How do you recognize dental problems in small pets? Small pets often suffer from dental problems as their teeth grow throughout their lives. Possible causes for this can be congenital or (more frequently) diet-related.
The first indication of problems in the mouth area are often changes in the position or length of the incisors. In most cases, however, these are only the tip of the iceberg and the real problems lie in the molar area.
In order to detect problems in the jaw area of small pets, they must be x-rayed under anesthesia. Abscesses in the mouth area should also always be x-rayed under anesthesia, as the cause is dental in 97 % of cases.
Teeth correction in pets should always be carried out under anaesthetic, as the risk of injury and trauma to the animals is high. In most cases, it is not possible to correct the teeth of small pets professionally while they are awake.
